- Abstract
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, our knowledge of the disease has evolved at a very rapid pace. It has been shown that an important role in its pathomechanism is played by the angiotensin converting enzyme receptor, through which virus SARS-CoV-2 enters the host cells and undergoes rapid replication, sometimes leading to organ damage. It is worth emphasizing that the occurrence of this disease is associated with the development of severe respiratory failure, which in some cases may lead to death. On the basis of numerous studies and the available statistical data, high-risk groups have been distinguished, which are particularly exposed to the severe course of the disease. This group includes people over 60 years of age and numerous comorbidities such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, active neoplastic disease and respiratory diseases. However, the authors of the research emphasize that it is necessary to conduct further research that will help to unambiguously answer the questions. Based on the available literature data, the article attempts to present the relationship between coexisting respiratory diseases with the incidence and course of COVID-19.
