- Abstract
The text provides a sociological interpretation of disability, which shows how, in Spain today, disability implies a weak and heteronomous social identity imposed by the non-disabled environment, as well as various objective conditions of existence that seem to condemn disabled people to low positions on the social pyramid, as Disabilities, Impairments and Health Status Survey (performed by INE in 1999) data indicate. But there is insufficient empirical evidence showing this "condemnation", and it would be desirable to develop research that could provide such evidence. In addition, although international norms on the accessibility of new technologies exists, these technologies constitute another exclusion factor. All this evidence indicates the need for a dramatic shift in conscience and practice towards disability.
