- Abstract
A thorough understanding of foundational learning theories is needed in today's educational environment. These lead to instructional approaches that can affect student motivation and learning, particularly in developmental coursework. The combination of learning theories and elements to enhance student motivation can create a learning context where students can thrive in their educational pursuits. This article provides an overview of behavioral theory, cognitive theory, and constructivist theory and explores their connection to elements of student learning motivation. We apply these principles to two developmental learning contexts: The FastStart Program at the Community College of Denver and an online academic English language course.
