- Abstract
This article is the report of an investigation about the expressive dynamics of the Mexican song “Cucurrucucú paloma” in the films Happy Together (Chun gwong cha sit, Wong Kar Wai, 1997), Talk to Her (Hable con ella, Pedro Almodóvar, 2002), Moonlight (Barry Jenkins, 2016) and in the series Orange Is the New Black (Jenji Kohan, 2013 to 2019) The analytical path was fueled by recent studies on how popular songs operate in audiovisual works; an examination of the musical, lyrical and symbolic charge of “Cucurrucucú paloma” and an analytical decoupage of the occurrences of the song in the four audiovisual pieces, in order to try to understand how these audiovisual products articulate adherences with this “llorona song”, and to build hypotheses about the reasons for the permanence of a Mexican huapango composed in the 50s of the last century in recent international audiovisual pieces.
