- Abstract
The article examines the writings of Elizabeth Bender, Harry Hand, and Joseph Du Bray, three Native American students at the Hampton Institute in Virginia. According to the author, the ambivalence evident in these students' writings reflects their ability to defend and preserve their identity and culture and to critique the project of assimilation in Native American boarding schools. It is suggested that student-run newspapers, such as the Hampton Institute's "Talks and Thoughts of the Hampton Indian Students," helped to form the basis for continued intertribal communications. Other topics include folklore, oral and pictorial communication, and the English language.
