- Abstract
Hydroquinone and its monomethyl ether and monobenzyl ether are potent skin depigmenting agents. Hydioquinone is the most widely used, its concentration in cosmetics sold within the EEC being restricted to 2%. Excessive use of creams containing hydroquinone has given rise to ochronosis-like hyperpigmentation. Leucomelanoderma, consisting of confetti-like depigmentation, has been associated with the use of the monobenzyl ether of hydroquinone, which is now prohibited from use in cosmetics. This report describes a patient with this characteristic pattern of depigmentation arising from the use of a proprietary cream containing hydroquinone only.
