Abstract: Background: For the identification of mathematical giftedness holistic approaches have been established, which include both standardized and non-standardized diagnostic procedures in the context of mathematics education. Against the background of individual impairments, it is an open question to what extent these approaches are suitable for identifying the mathematical potential of hearing-impaired learners. Methods: As part of an explorative case study, the individual giftedness profile of the hearing-impaired learner Niklas (age 13) is outlined using various diagnostic methods and instruments. Results: The case illustrates that it is possible to identify mathematical giftedness in hearing-impaired learners on the basis of various mathematical educational diagnostic procedures. Discussion: Non-standardized diagnostic procedures have advantages over standardized tests for identifying and capturing the mathematical potential of hearing-impaired learners.
