- Abstract
Roger Derek Pickard, a prominent member of the British Astronomical Association (BAA), passed away at the age of 80. He served as the Director of the Variable Star Section for 20 years and as President from 2007 to 2009. Pickard was highly regarded for his work in photometry, particularly in CCD photometry, and his efforts to encourage others to enter this specialized field. He promoted collaboration between professionals and amateurs in variable star research and made significant contributions to the progress of astronomy. In addition to his astronomical pursuits, Pickard was involved in the Crayford Manor House Astronomical Society (CMHAS) and was recognized for his international cooperation and support of visual observing. He and his wife Marian were also dedicated church bell-ringers and foster parents.
