- Abstract
The paper focuses on the use of emotional means of expression in two Baroque sermons given to mark the 50th wedding anniversary of Johann Josef Anton Eleasar Kittel and Anna Maria Kittel in Schönburg (Šumburk) on 25 November 1777. Neither the German nor the Czech texts of the sermons have previously been published in full. As both sermons are homiletic texts, the preachers were restricted in their freedom to use emotive linguistic means of expression. Such means were used to capture the attention of the audience. The sermons had two functions: to teach the congregation about faith and to advise them on practical living. The sermons aimed to reinforce awareness of God's law and show how it was to be applied in everyday life. The preachers openly aimed to persuade the audience that the married life of the couple was to be viewed as a model. This is an objective, rational element in the sermons, including an exegesis of Biblical texts. The second level of the sermons targets the subjective, emotional reception of the text by the audience; in the examples analyzed here, this level reinforced confessional and social discipline among the congregation.
