- Abstract
This article examines two aestheticscapes of a Catholic charismatic group and how these influence the participants' subjective experience through different aesthetic strategies. The organizers aim at anchoring their message in an emotionally intensive and sustainable way. A central thesis, well established in academic literature, maintains that this is realized through a state of mental absorption. The two case studies single out different sensorial elements from the multimodal aestheticscapes that introduce the hypnotic state of consciousness, and particular aesthetic and semantic markers that are anchored during this state. Through this implicit aesthetic regulation of subjects, the ritual alters the form of subjectivity of participants over time, which is a result that makes the topic so relevant for the study of religion. Joint speech is introduced as a key term in the aesthetics of religion to analyze the intercessory prayer and to describe voice, tonality and singing in general.
