- Abstract
Previous measures of pattern intensity have assumed a direct relationship between intensity of pattern and mean square/mean, i.e., pattern intensity is related to plant abundance. From a series of simple arithmetical models pattern intensity is shown in fact to be independent of density. The statistic nΣ1|x2n-o 1 - x2n|/n°Ns (where x = individual values of the data matrix at any one block size (Ns) and n = the number of pairs of comparisons of any one block size) gives a density-independent measure of observed intensity which has a simple relationship to mean square at any one block size. This allows pattern intensity to be calculated directly from mean square values: calculated intensity = /2°variance Ns In field data calculated intensity gives an inflated value when compared with the observed intensity of the data. A generalized correction term has been derived from a range of density data to adjust calculated intensity values. This approach is extended to cover data where the same square root relationship holds but requires a series of correction terms for each block size.
