- Abstract
This paper is a theoretically informed empirical research that tries to address the real causes of economic migration to Greece during the last decades. It reviews critically the existing mainstream theoretical approaches to migration and adopts an alternative "middle-level" approach. An approach which by combining macro-scopic structural/systemic forces with meso-scopic family strategies, kinship and social networks, offers a more realistic interpretation of migration. This theoretical framework is then tested and verified by concrete research evidence concerning Albanian immigrants in the city of Herakleion, Crete.
