- Abstract
Dayton, a city located inMontgomery County (MoCo), Ohio, is considered a "hot spot" for deaths related to unintentional drug overdoses (OD). People living in this area have been using opioids and other drugs at unprecedented levels since 2014. In 2019, approximately 288 people in Montgomery County died from a drug overdose. In 2017, 1,385 women in Ohio died of opioid OD death; 183, (13.2%) were fromMoCo alone. The opioid epidemic affected all jurisdictions within MoCo, overwhelming the criminal justice system, coroner, fire/emergency services, addiction treatment/prevention programs, and public health. In particular, jails/prisons swelled with women convicted of drug related crimes and treatment providers had extensive waitlists. A pilot program initiated to support women in recovery, Bridging the Gap, was implemented in MoCo. A total of 72 women received Certified Peer Support (CPS). CPS is a person who has self-identified as being in recovery from mental illness, substance abuse, or co-occurring disorders. Preliminary results indicate that the women reported increases in life satisfaction, self-esteem and social support, and decreases in drug and alcohol use. Final quantitative and qualitative analyses will be reported after the conclusion of the grant.
