- Title
AN HONEST DECADE: WILLIAM EMPSON AND THE AMBIGUITIES OF WRITING IN THE 1930s.
- Authors
KOHLMANN, BENJAMIN
- Abstract
The article analyzes several poems by William Empson, including "Note on Local Flora," "Doctrinal Point," and "Your Teeth Are Ivory Towers". According to the author, the poems reflect Empson's engagement with the politics and aesthetics of the 1930s and show him questioning his literary strategies of abstraction. It is suggested that Empson's periods of low productivity and his trips to Japan and China are significant to an understanding of his career and to the role of detachment in his poetry.
