- Authors
BERKMAN, JOHN
- Abstract
This article explores Aquinas's doctrine of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and proposes a new interpretation of these gifts. It discusses the distinction between virtue-habitus and gift-habitus, the concept of instinctus associated with the gifts, and argues for the superiority of the gifts over the virtues. The author also examines how the gifts and infused virtues operate in the spiritual growth of individuals. The article emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit in the moral and spiritual life and calls for a moral theology that goes beyond a virtue ethic.
