- Abstract
This article analyses Anders als die Andern (Different from the Others, 1919), to examine the contribution of film to the sexological project of Magnus Hirschfeld and investigate how sexology looks different once we understand it in the context of the institution of cinema and the medium of film. This article argues that Anders als die Andern Pursues two aims: the popularisation of sexological knowledge, and the visualisation of a common sexological strategy to use history affirmatively to secure identity categories. By choosing the new medium of film to represent these aims, however, these sexological strategies were significantly complicated. While this article examines the opportunities and challenges offered by the medium of film in this particular example, it also aims to inspire further research on the relationship between sexology, the institution of cinema and the medium of film
