The article discusses English poet Alexander Pope, exploring his notions of the public and private sphere in his works and life. Works considered include his poem "Epistle to Dr. Arbuthnot," his poem "The Rape of the Lock," and his translations of Greek poet Homer's works "Iliad" and "Odyssey." Topics include publisher Jacob Tonson, the Whig group known as the Kit-Cat Club, and authors and publishing in the 18th century. The historical theories on modernity forwarded by German philosopher Jürgen Habermas are also explored.
