- Abstract
The article presents the results of a study of gastrointestinal illness outbreaks in Massachusetts school children in 2003 and 2004. The outbreaks occurred in Middlesex and Suffolk Counties in September 2003 and in Suffolk County in May 2004. Affected students suffered gastrointestinal symptoms and neurologic symptoms within a short time of having eaten the flour tortillas in their school-provided lunches. The illness was of short duration. Analysis of the tortillas found them to have high levels of calcium propionate and potassium bromate, both of which can cause gastrointestinal illness. The incident underlines the importance of speedy cooperation between public health departments and schools.
