- Abstract
Pieter Cannoot's book, "The Right to Personal Autonomy Regarding Sex, Gender and Sexual Orientation: The Case of Belgium," explores the need for a new constitutional right to personal autonomy regarding sexual identity in order to protect the human rights of sexual minorities. The book critically analyzes the failure of international and European human rights law to fully incorporate gender non-conforming persons and proposes a constitutional right to enhance the legal status of LGBTIQ+ individuals. The author focuses on the Belgian legal system as a case study, highlighting how stereotypes and a heteronormative model restrict personal autonomy for sexual minorities. The book concludes by suggesting the inclusion of a fundamental right to personal autonomy within the constitutional framework to improve the legal status of gender non-conforming persons.
