- Abstract
The search for health and disease prevention has lead to excessive consumption of vitamins and minerals for the population, but the possible risks and adverse effects are not knowing. Many of these substances can be found in food, and most people do not need supplementation. The main known vitamins are vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin D, betacarotene (as vitamin A), vitamin K and vitamin B complex. However, other antioxidants can also be found in minerals such as selenium, copper, chromium, calcium, iron, iodine, manganese and zinc. Although there are few studies about the side effects of consumption of these elements, it is known that it needs an individualized assessment conducted by a qualified professional in order to verify the necessity and the correct dosage to be ingested. The aim of this paper is to review the literature about the side effects of consumption of vitamins and minerals in order to clarify the population and health professionals about their real indications and risks.
