- Abstract
The article analyzes the inspirational movie "Akeelah and the Bee," which is a melodrama that exposes American Race relations and White supremacy. This film is about an African-American young girl Akeelah Anderson, who had faced lot of threats and obstacles in her life. Instead of getting disappointed she participates in the spelling bee competition and ultimately wins the Scripps National Spelling Bee with support of her English Professor. It analyzes the messages of race, privilege and age in the film by applying professor Linda William's five aspects of melodrama. It llustrates how African-American people can be successfully absorbed into the dominant culture.
