- Title
Profiling the SERM patient.
- Authors
de Villiers, Tobie
- Abstract
The article focuses on the development of compounds, such as the selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), that retain the beneficial effects of estrogen while removing their potential for adverse effects on the breast and the endometrium. The compounds have been developed due to concerns over possible adverse effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in postmenopausal women. Raloxifene mimics the effects of estrogen in bone and the cardiovascular system, but acts as an antiestrogen.
