- Abstract
This essay explores the photographic representation of labour in the Cuban magazine Cuba/Cuba Internacional during the late 1960s and early 1970s, a period that witnessed the radicalization of the Cuban revolution and the increase of Soviet dominance on the island. By appropriating Robert Frank’s style, a new generation of Cuban photographers, led by the Swiss photographer Luc Chessex, aimed to collect ‘facts’ without embellishing reality, therefore producing images that strove to question revolutionary myths. Given that Cuba/Cuba Internacional was the main organ of government propaganda abroad, it is argued that through photographing labour, this magazine became a pivotal visual messenger vis-à-vis Moscow in order to secure Cuba’s membership in the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA).
