- Abstract
Multiple Sites of Community Interest have been identified and classified in the last few decades, with the aim of conserving natural and semi natural habitats in the Portuguese territory. Also the areas corresponding to the Habitat Types described by the Directive 92/43/EEC, have been mapped, similarly to what have been done in other European Community Member-states. The relationship between land use type and its importance for nature conservation is not straightforward or consensual for all types of land use. Assuming that when an area is classified, it is deemed as having conservation value, and using the maps of Land Cover, Sites of Community Interest and areas in the Habitat Directive, we have determined how frequently each type of land use has been classified as a Site of Community Interest or as Habitat of the Directive, thus determining the implicit value of each land use type for habitat conservation, at a national level. We have also analyzed the correspondence between each land use type and each habitat type of the Directive, obtaining a highly significant correlation, in particular for oaks. However, the cartographic basis of these habitats needs further investigation so that all the correspondences may be elucidated.
