- Abstract
Olgerts Ripa had a daring, ground breaking and creative life. Over the years he had become a respected scientist in the textile industry and made a considerable contribution in research of physical and chemical properties and structure of natural and synthetic fibres and polymers. Notable are his early findings at the University of Leeds under the guidance of Professor J. B. Speakman (1948-1951) on variations of plasticity of animal fibres, such as in wool, are related to the content of sulphur of the fibres. He had continued to contribute to American industrial companies by means of patents and reports (1951-1971). As aman of great ability, he was curious and excited about research and life. His lifelong love of Latvian culture flourished as he corresponded with his friends and colleagues, and participated actively in cultural activities of Latvian communities. Many of his letters and unfinished manuscripts have been preserved by his son Janis Ripa. A few papers have been deposited at the Latvian Chemistry History Museum, Riga, Latvia. Ripa's scientific legacy is widely accepted and recognized by his contemporaries
