- Abstract
School leadership is considered as a key factor for educational improvement. It requires mobilizing all members of the organization to involve and commit them in the achievement of its objectives. This paper aims to analyze the configuration of school leadership and the predominant network of social relationships in five socially and academically successful Chilean schools. A 9-item questionnaire organized into two sections, which include the professional profile of the informants and information on social networks in teaching, managing, coexistence and personal affairs practices was administered. The characteristic leadership patterns of these centers were identified from data on the network and the position of the actors. Data were analyzed using a two-phase mixed approach. In the first, the relational matrices obtained through a questionnaire were examined using the Analysis of Social Networks approach; in the second stage, the data gathered from semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and follow-up with the directors were analyzed qualitatively using the Atlas.ti software. Results indicate a generalized tendency of networks towards focused leadership patterns, a low density of relationships, and a relatively high centralization of networks. These results increase the predominant controversy in the specialized literature about the role of leadership in school success.
