- Title
What Shall We Do with Myth: History and Midrash in the Retelling of the Exodus Story by an Israeli Writer.
- Authors
Jacobson, David C.
- Abstract
The article presents discussion of the interpretation of the Exodus story and similar Israeli historical myths. The author highlights the need and distinct features for both historically-centered factual analysis and religiously-centered Jewish midrash practices in examining Biblical mythology. Specific references are made to the novella "The Miracle Hater," by Shulamith Hareven, and its manifestation and advocacy of this dualistic analysis within the story of the Exodus. The benefits of simultaneous demonstration of meaning in historical and contemporary situations are asserted.
