THE HAUNTING OF GAY MANILA.
- Authors
Benedicto, Bobby
- Abstract
The article examines how attempts to efface the bakla cause the exclusionary class and gender rules to be made real. Also examined is how the GLBT community in Manila, Philippines efforts at modernity are overshadowed by the bakla's presence. The bakla is often depicted as a sexual tradition that blends together homosexuality, transvestism and/or effeminacy, and lower-class status, and which is symbolized by the parlorista, the cross-dresser working in low-end beauty salon in Manila, Philippines.
