- Abstract
Objective: To compare the effectiveness of antimicrobial activity of 0.2% CHX, 2% CHX, 2.5 CHX NaOCl, 5.25% NaOCl and saline against Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Materials and Methods: 105 study samples were tested using agar diffusion test (ADT). All the microorganisms were cultured on blood agar plate (BA) and incubated at 37°C for 24 hours. Forty-two plates were inoculated on the medium respectively. 105 paper discs (5 mm diameter) were soaked in tested irrigants for 1 minute and placed on inoculated plates. The plates were incubated in ambient incubator at 37 °C for 48 hours. Zone of inhibition was recorded and results were analyzed statistically using One-way ANOVA and Post-hoc test (Scheffe's procedure). Results: 5.25% NaOCl exhibited the most effective antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans. However, the most effective antimicrobial activity against Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus were observed using 2% CHX. Saline was found ineffective against all microorganisms tested. Conclusion: All the irrigants tested except for saline were effective against Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans.
