- Abstract
The article discusses the symbolic and social aspects of churches and church building among the Benedictine missionaries of the Kongregation der Missionsbenediktiner von St. Ottilien (Congretation of the Benedictine Missionaries of St. Ottilien, OSB) during their activities in German East Africa, later known as Tanganyika and Tanzania, in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The author surveys various aspects of church architecture and interior decoration, both in Tanzania and in Germany. Churches analyzed include St.-Josef-Kathedrale (Saint Joseph's Cathedral) in Daressalam, Tanzania, St.-Felicitas-Kirche (Saint Felicity Church) in Münsterschwarzach, Germany, and Maria-Hilf-Kathedrale (Cathedral of the Intercession of Mary) in Ndanda, Tanzania.
