- Abstract
The article discusses parentally arranged or brokered marriages as depicted in German literature of the 19th century. Literary examples cited include author Thomas Mann's novel "Buddenbrooks" and social historical works by philosophers Arthur Schopenhauer and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. The importance of maintaining an endogamous social "circle" and securing family fortunes are cited as pressures that supported such marriage arrangements and frequent nuptial pairings among cousins as well as between uncles and nieces.
