- Title
Immanuel Jakobovits: A Coherent Theology of Apparent Contradiction.
- Authors
Freud-Kandel, Miri
- Abstract
The article discusses the theology of Immanuel Jakobovits, Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the British Commonwealth from 1966 to 1991. Apparently contradictory aspects of his brand of Orthodox Judaism are discussed, namely, his conservatism on religious and social issues such as public welfare policy, women's rights, and sexuality, and his politically liberal form of Zionism, which called on Israel to acknowledge the plight of Palestinian refugees and negotiate a land for peace deal regarding the Israeli occupied territories.
