- Abstract
The article presents a discussion about the role of city church life in European cities and towns during the Protestant Reformation. Particular note is taken of the Reformation movement's reliance on city culture for its communication to other parts of Europe. Descriptions are given of the representation of city superintendents as Lutheran city fathers. The article discusses a 1568 portrait by artist Ludger tom Ring the Younger, representing Hermann Huddäus, the superintendent of Minden, Germany.
