- Abstract
A literary criticism which discusses the strange relationships between the three characters in the novel "Chinaberry" by James Still is presented. She focuses on the way in which the character Lurie Winters helps to cure the psychological damage experienced by her husband due to the loss of his first wife, Anson Winters, as well as Anson's devotion to the nameless narrator, who the author argues serves as a surrogate for Anson's deceased son Johannes. Other topics addressed include Victorian morality and social norms.
