- Title
A Mixed Methods Analysis of the Effects of an Integrative Geobiological Study of Petrified Wood in Introductory College Geology Classrooms.
- Authors
Clary, Renee M.; Wandersee, James H.
- Abstract
The article presents the authors' study to determine if integrated study of petrified wood could improve college students' understanding of fossilization, geologic time, and evolution. The authors carried out a three-semester, mixed method research study in introductory U.S. college geology classes. They used "The Petrified Wood Survey" prior to and after instruction with both the experimental and control classes, adding integrated petrified wood instruction to the experimental group. They describe the purpose, theoretical framework, context, and design of the study together with their data analysis and conclusions. Students' comments are included, as are the authors' thoughts on the study's implications for geology teaching in higher education.
