- Abstract
And does neutrophilia or lymphopenia contribute directly to the adverse effects linked to higher NLR or are those cell line abnormalities markers of the chronic illness requiring cardiac care, therefore, less likely to be easily mitigated? Lymphopenia has been identified as an indicator for higher mortality and longer recovery after pediatric cardiac surgery.[2], [3], [4] However, a cause-effect relationship between lymphopenia and worse outcomes has not been clearly elucidated. In summary, while it does appear that preoperative cell line abnormalities including neutrophilia, lymphopenia, and the related NLR might serve as markers to postoperative recovery and even morbidity and mortality; the cause-effect association between those abnormalities and outcomes is not well demonstrated.
