- Abstract
The article discusses the controversy surrounding the decision to add a sculpture of U.S. president Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) sitting on a wheelchair to the completed FDR Memorial in Washington, D.C. More specifically, the author describes her experience of participating in a 'Taking Part' workshop in which the memorial's original designer, Lawrence Halprin, engaged with the public in the design and planning of the remodeled memorial. The author comments on how Halprin framed the workshop in such a way as to maintain creative control.
