The article discusses the highlights of the conference titled "Designing the Public Realm: Creating Space for Sustainable Communities and Thriving Urban Environments" held at the Barbican Centre in London, England. Sarah Gaventa, director of the Space division of England's Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), opened with examples of poor design and gave a list of requirements for good design of public space. Transport planner Chris Greenwood and architect Peter Heath talked about the personality of transport planners.
