- Title
Benjamin Britten: Inventing English Expressionism?
- Authors
Kildea, Paul
- Abstract
This article presents an account of personal life of English composer Benjamin Britten and his association with English expressionism. It is claimed that Britten didn't knew much about musicians Alban Berg and his works. With his opera "Peter Grimes," Britten came face to face with European expressionism and modernism in a way that no other Englishman had managed to do so. Also, in truth, Britten's actual music is too organized to be considered expressionist—too harmonically structured. It is claimed that there are certainly expressionist gestures throughout his oeuvre.
