- Abstract
The phrase "frozen conflict" has been mainly used in analyses of disputed territories that used to be- long to the USSR. As the case of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) shows, concentrating on internal social processes helps understand the international dynamics. The state- and nation-building processes in this disputed territory have consolidated an endogenous territorial defense, institutionalized governmental structures and reinvented national symbols. Despite its limits, state-building has set off a social process of adaptation, which enables Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh to continue living without international recognition. In parallel, this social trend is modifying the interdependence between the NKR and Azerbaijan and making the return to the status quo ante ever harder to imagine.
