- Title
Making Data-Driven Decisions: Silent Reading.
- Authors
Trudel, Heidi
- Abstract
The article focuses on the issue of whether sustained silent reading (SSR) in schools improves students' reading comprehension. A study by the U.S. National Reading Panel found little convincing evidence that SSR improves students' reading comprehension, and now the practice of having students read on their own in the classroom is coming into question. But SSR is not the only way to make sure that students are getting time to read in the classroom. One alternative to the SSR is a more structured independent reading (IR) program.
