- Abstract
This paper is based on interviews held with female national football coaches on their career pathways. The coaches interviewed were either German or originally from a German-speaking country, but not all of them work in Germany. We first identified learning cultures and wanted to find out how they learn in a traditionally male domain. There are many players and agents that are involved in elite football besides the coach. Coaching is more than just training a team to play well and participate in games and tournaments. Although the coaches showed many parallels in their career as football players and coaches it was observed that learning is individual and cannot be generalized. Learning is seen as a progressive process throughout the coaching career, in which many agents play a role. Although the formal coaches education is of importance, it is not central. Especially defeats are situations from which the coaches learned a lot in the long run. But the coaches rely also on mentors and social networks.
