- Abstract
The mathematical model for traffic flow on a road with variable width was derived by Sheng and Zhang (IMA J. Appl. Math. 87(5):757–785, 2022) recently. The interaction of elementary waves were given explicitly when the road becomes broad. In this paper, we apply the newly developed model to a more general situation where the road becomes narrow first and expands to the previous level after a straight road. We consider the Riemann problem with three pieces of constant initial data. The elementary waves include: shock wave, rarefaction wave, contact discontinuity and stationary wave, respectively. By analyzing the interaction of elementary waves, we show the large time behavior of the detailed solutions.
