The article examines the hypothesis that human dancers do not dance as gracefully as the marionettes in Heinrich von Kleist's essay "On the Marionette Theatre." A mechanistic aesthetics of dance which departs from late eighteenth-century notions of dance as a natural expression of passion is outlined in Kleist's essay. Kleist's essay is structured as an argumentative dialogue like Lucian text.
