- Abstract
The current study aims to trace the likely impact of earthworm abundance on fertility of soil and to explore the nutrients available in earthworm castings in comparison to adjoining soil in three different districts of Punjab: Amritsar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar and Moga. In comparison to neighbouring soils, earthworm casts had considerably more nutrients on average at all of the studied sites. The utmost remarkable results were acquired at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, where earthworm populations were higher and casts contained elevated levels of nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, organic carbon, and appropriate levels of pH and EC (electrical conductivity) when compared to surrounding soil. Earthworm abundance and nutrient availability were at their peak in August and this reciprocates with earthworm population. According to the research, earthworms and earthworm castings are excellent nutrition sources for plants and can improve the physical and chemical qualities of soil.
