- Abstract
This essay focuses on the work of graphic novelist Mark Kalesniko, particularly the desperation experienced by his characters. The graphic novel "Mail Order Bride" takes place in the fictionalized town of Bandini and is semi-autobiographical in that it focuses on the relationship between a Korean woman, Kyung Seo, and a Canadian man, Monty Wheeler. Kyung's transition away from Monty's domination and towards an expression of her own selfhood. Kalesniko's artwork and his representation of bodies as an exploration into wider issues of orientalism and Western conceptions of Eastern sexuality.
