- Abstract
A recent article published in the Journal of the American Water Works Association provides a comprehensive analysis of water usage in the Colorado River Basin. The researchers found that irrigated agriculture is the largest consumer of Colorado River water, accounting for 74% of direct human use and 52% of overall water consumption. The study also highlights the need for detailed knowledge of water usage in order to develop strategies for sustainable water supply and demand. In another study, researchers from the University of Guelph investigated sulfolane, an emerging pollutant in groundwater across the Canadian prairies, and its impact on water quality and ecosystems. Finally, the US Department of Energy has renewed funding for the National Alliance for Water Innovation, which aims to develop technologies for desalination and water reuse to address the challenges of climate change and population growth.
