- Abstract
Sarcopenia is the gradual decline in muscular mass, strength, and functional abilities of an individual, leading to an elevated risk of falls and fatality. NeuroMuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) is a viable therapeutic choice. The latest portable devices for electrotherapy enable the administration of NMES in both hospital and home settings. Electro-stimulation can be conducted either passively or actively, with the latter involving the patient’s activation of the stimulated muscle. Initial data gathered at the U.O. of Rehabilitation of the “Luigi Sacco” hospital in Milan have revealed encouraging outcomes in the incorporation of NMES (in both passive and active mode) into traditional physiotherapeutic treatment. This technique shows promise in patients diagnosed with sarcopenia, both in the hospital and at home.
