- Title
LIFETIME EARNINGS AND PHYSICIANS' CHOICE OF SPECIALTY.
- Authors
Sloan, Frank A.
- Abstract
The article discusses the reasons for the preference of medical students in the U.S. for specialties rather than general practice and their selections of their specialties in connection to income. Since World War II, there has been gradual disappearance of the family physician and discussion on trends toward physician specialization has increased. A study was conducted in order to determine whether lifetime earnings in various specialties affect physicians. The study reveals that income payments to practicing physicians and regular payments to residents in graduate medical education programs had only little effect on their choice of field.
