- Abstract
Heart-focused anxiety is defined as a fear of cardiovascular sensations and their anticipated negative consequences. This construct is associated with the development, exacerbation, and maintenance of noncardiac chest pain. The Cardiac Anxiety Questionnaire was specifically developed to assess heart-focused anxiety. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the factor structure and psychometric properties of the French-Canadian version of the Cardiac Anxiety Questionnaire in a sample of 719 adults suffering from noncardiac chest pain who consulted a physician in an emergency department. The factorial analysis showed that a 4-factor model (fear, avoidance, attention, and reassurance seeking) was more representative of the data than the original 3-factor model. Results also indicated that the internal consistency of the French version of the Cardiac Anxiety Questionnaire was 0.88 and that its convergent (r=.62) and divergent validities (r=.31) were satisfactory. This version of the questionnaire appears valid to assess heart-focused anxiety in a French-speaking population suffering from noncardiac chest pain.
